Hopefully you didn't go and buy some random arrows for your new bow. If you use arrows that are too weak then they will most likely shatter into lots of pieces. This can obviously lead to hurting you or your bow or both.
The way you can choose is by looking at the arrow and seeing if it will work with the your bow's poundage. For example, if an arrow says that they are for bows with a poundage of 45 pounds or less and your bow's poundage is about 45 pounds then that arrow would probably work good with your bow. But that's not everything. You don't want arrows that are too strong because they tend to be heavier and you want your arrows to be as light as they can so they fly faster.
Before you go buy some arrows you will need to choose the material of the arrows. There are currently four different arrow materials, carbon, aluminum, fiberglass, and wood.
Carbon arrows are very light and strong and are probably the most popular arrow material. The down side of these arrows is that they need flexed.
Flexing is is a test to know if your arrows are strong enough to be shot. This is done by bending your arrows from side to side and up and down to make sure that they will not break upon release from your bow. If they break after being flexed then that means that they are not safe to shoot with any more. When you flex them, you must make sure you are not flexing them too far because that can lead to them breaking when nothing was actually wrong with them. You must check that they are still straight when you are done flexing them. You only have to flex them once before or after you shoot unless you shoot something very hard that can damage your arrow like a rock.
Aluminum arrows were very popular before carbon arrows were invented. They still are used a lot because they do not need to be flexed and they are very light.
Fiberglass arrows are cheap to buy but break very easily. I would only recommend these arrows for youth bows.
Wood arrows are mainly designed for recurve and longbows. You never would want to flex a wood arrow because it will most likely snap it in half.
I hope this post will help you find the perfect arrows. If you have any questions or requests for post topics feel free to comment. Thanks!
